Sweet treats are as popular with children as adults. These days, most conventional restaurants produce desserts filled with sugar, dairy, preservatives and other ingredients which can be toxic for the body (especially when consumed in large portions). Refined sugar has the ability to make us feel great one moment and then send us for a mood swing the next. It doesn’t add to a youthful skin either.
The good news is there are great tasting alternatives to sugar that are healthy for the body and emotions. One natural sweetener is dates. Dates are high in antioxidants and vitamin C which are beneficial for anti-ageing, particularly of the skin.
Here is a Caramel Sauce recipe, ala The Longevity Company, where dates is a featured ingredient:
Soak 1 cup of dates in 1 cup of water for a few minutes.
Add 2 peeled and sliced apples.
Add a teaspoon of cinnamon.
Add 2 tablespoons coconut oil/milk.
Blend in a vitamix or blender on high for 15 minutes.
Pour over a fruit salad or savour as is.
Turn the Caramel Sauce above into a warm dessert:
Do as above.
Add 1 egg.
sprinkle cacao powder on top.
sprinkle coconut flakes on top.
Bake on 100°C for 25 minutes.
